1. Dazhao Temple

Located in the heart of Hohhot, Dazhao Temple is the earliest Gelugpa Buddhist monastery built in the city. It is often referred to as the "birthplace of Hohhot," with the saying "Dazhao Temple came before Guihua City," marking the origin of this Qingcheng city. The temple houses a silver Buddha statue of Sakyamuni cast from 32,000 taels of silver, which, along with dragon carvings and murals, is celebrated as one of the "Three Treasures of Dazhao." These artifacts are nationally protected cultural relics that bear witness to the cultural fusion between Mongolian and Han traditions.

Strolling through the courtyard with its red walls and golden roofs, you can immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere of Tibetan Buddhism, admire exquisite Qing Dynasty murals, and listen to historical tales about Emperor Kangxi's stay here. Adjacent to Dazhao Temple lies the historic Sai Shang Old Street, a commercial thoroughfare from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The old buildings with blue bricks and gray tiles exude a vibrant urban charm. After visiting the temple, you can easily stop by to savor local delicacies like shao mai (steamed dumplings) and milk skin pastry.

2. Inner Mongolia Museum

The Inner Mongolia Museum, a national first-class museum and an encyclopedia of Inner Mongolia's grassland civilization, is open to the public free of charge with advance reservations required. Its collection boasts over 150,000 cultural artifacts, ranging from ancient Chagan Nur dinosaur fossils and the Xiongnu King's golden crown to precious relics from the Yuan Dynasty Empire. This single museum provides a comprehensive understanding of Inner Mongolia's history spanning from ancient times to modern era.

The "Ancient World" exhibition hall here features colossal dinosaur fossils that will leave you awestruck by the primal vitality of this land. The "Grassland Heroes" gallery vividly recreates the glorious history of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Yuan Empire. The "Grassland Culture" section showcases the folk traditions and daily customs of the Mongolian people. We recommend setting aside 3-4 hours to explore at your own pace, allowing you to fully appreciate the millennia-old stories of this vast grassland.

3. Zhaojun Museum

The Zhaojun Museum is a site-based museum based on the tomb site of Wang Zhaojun, a national 4A-level scenic area and a symbol of ethnic unity. The "Qingzhong" here, also known as Wang Zhaojun's tomb, is one of the largest Han tombs in China, with a history of over two thousand years. It has been praised by literati and scholars throughout the ages. Mr.Dong Biwu once inscribed a poem here, extolling Zhaojun's peaceful achievements in her journey to the frontier.

The museum centers on "marriage alliance culture" and features the Xiongnu History Museum and the China Ancient Marriage Alliance Culture Museum. Through artifacts and exhibitions, it vividly tells the historical story of Wang Zhaojun's journey to the frontier for marriage alliances, which promoted peaceful interactions between the Han and Xiongnu peoples. From the top of Qingzhong, you can overlook the panoramic view of Hohhot city and feel the profound heritage of ethnic exchanges and integration in the pine and cypress-surrounded gardens.

4. Ertrechuan Grassland

The Chilu Grassland, the birthplace of the verse from "The Chilu Ballad" that reads "The sky is vast and blue, the wilderness boundless; the wind bends the grass to reveal cattle and sheep," lies just a half-hour drive from downtown Hohhot, making it one of China's rare "urban grasslands." This area has restored the ecological landscape of a ten-thousand-mu grassland, allowing visitors to experience authentic grassland culture in the vicinity of the city without long-distance travel.

Here, you can experience horseback riding and archery, take photos while wearing Mongolian robes, step into a yurt, and savor authentic Mongolian milk tea and hand-held meat. In summer, the grasslands are carpeted with lush green grass and wildflowers bloom across the landscape. You can also watch the grand live performance "Eternal Hymn to Horses," immerse yourself in Mongolian equestrian stunts and dance culture, and experience the bold lifestyle of nomadic people through an immersive journey.

5. Xiangsha Bay

Xiangsha Bay is located at the eastern end of the Kubuqi Desert, approximately a 3-hour drive from Hohhot city center. As a national 5A-level scenic area, it is renowned as the "Desert Disneyland." The most remarkable phenomenon here is the "Ming Sha" (singing sand) effect, where the sand emits a buzzing sound during movementa characteristic that also gives the scenic area its name. This represents a rare natural wonder.

Here, you can experience a variety of activities including desert surf scooters, camel rides across dunes, sand sliding, and off-road vehicles. The theme parks on Xiansha Island and Yuesha Island cater to diverse visitor needs. Although the desert can be scorching at noon during summer, the breathtaking sunsets and starry skies in the early morning and evening make it an ideal destination to immerse yourself in desert culture.

6. Huitengxile Grassland

The Huitengxile Grassland is a high-altitude meadow grassland located not far from Hohhot, with an elevation of 1,800 meters. The average summer temperature here is only 18°C, earning it the nickname "grassland air conditioner" and making it an ideal summer retreat. The area hosts Asia's largest wind farm, where clusters of wind turbines stand tall across the grassland, forming a breathtaking panorama alongside azure skies, white clouds, lush green grass, and wildflowers.

The crown jewel of the scenic area is Huanghuagou Valley, featuring unique canyon landscapes, babbling streams, and vibrant flower fields. From June to August, the hillsides are awash with golden blooms, creating a paradise for photography enthusiasts. Visitors can take cable cars through the valleys or hike across the grasslands to experience the distinctive alpine meadow terrain. Activities like horseback riding and grass sliding let you soak in the vastness and refreshing coolness of the prairie.
