Hunan · Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

I. Status and Overview of the Scenic Area

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, located in Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, is China's first national forest park (approved in 1982), as well as a World Natural Heritage Site, World Geopark, and a national 5A-level tourist attraction. It is renowned worldwide for its unique quartz sandstone peak forest landforms and served as the prototype for the Hanging Mountain in the Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar." Known as "three thousand strange peaks and eight hundred beautiful waters" and the "original landscape painting of China," it is a world-class natural wonder.

The scenic area boasts vast expanse, with its core tourist zone featuring peak forests, canyons, streams, and dense forests as the main attractions. Characterized by unique landscapes, pristine ecology, and fresh air, it serves as a premier destination integrating natural scenery, summer retreats, wellness experiences, and hiking adventures. Annually, it attracts countless domestic and international visitors seeking to explore this fairyland-like wonderland.

II. Geological Origin and Evolution

The breathtaking peak forest of Zhangjiajie is a masterpiece of geological evolution spanning hundreds of millions of years. Approximately 380 million years ago, this area was still a vast oceanic basin with coastal sandy environments. Through prolonged sedimentation processes, massive layers of quartz sandstone formed. As the Earth's crust uplifted over time, the region gradually emerged from the sea to become land. Over subsequent geological processes—including water erosion, gravitational collapse, and weathering—the hard quartz sandstone was continuously sculpted, ultimately creating the distinctive landscape we see today: towering peak columns, deep canyons, and rugged rock formations.

The scenic area spans an altitude range of 300 to 1,300 meters, featuring over 3,000 unique peaks that rise majestically from the ground. These formations exhibit diverse shapes and a harmonious arrangement, with more than 1,000 peak columns exceeding 200 meters in height. Their grandeur and extraordinary geological patterns make this quartz sandstone peak forest landscape exceptionally rare worldwide, holding immense scientific research value and aesthetic appeal.

III. Core Scenic Areas and Landscapes

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park boasts numerous attractions, divided into multiple zones with distinct and unique landscapes, each offering countless highlights.

Huangshizhai: As the saying goes, "You haven't truly visited Zhangjiajie without climbing Huangshizhai." This is the largest and most expansive viewing platform within the scenic area. Perched at an altitude of 1,200 meters, its flat summit offers a 360-degree panoramic view of surrounding peaks. Key attractions like the Six Wonders Pavilion, Star-Picking Terrace, and Front Garden are clustered here, allowing visitors to take in the entire mountain forest landscape. Visitors can choose to hike up the mountain or opt for a cable car ride for a hassle-free and energy-efficient experience.

Jinbian Stream: Stretching 5.7 kilometers through the canyon, this waterway is hailed as a "landscape gallery." Its crystal-clear waters flow year-round, framed by towering peaks and ancient trees that cast dense shade. Along its course lie iconic landmarks including Golden Whip Rock, Divine Eagle Guarding the Whip, Mountain Splitting to Save Mother, and The Thousand-Mile Reunion. With murmuring streams, melodious bird songs, and frequent sightings of macaques in the forest, this trail exudes rustic charm and serves as an ideal route for hiking and rejuvenation.

Yuanjiajie: The core filming location of "Avatar," it epitomizes the essence of Zhangjiajie's peak forest landscapes. Home to the legendary Qiankun Pillar (South Heaven Pillar) standing approximately 150 meters tall, this vertical structure tapers from top to bottom with its majestic silhouette resembling a celestial mountain suspended in mist—precisely the prototype of Mount Harriera. The site also features the World's First Natural Stone Bridge spanning two peaks in breathtaking grandeur, and the mesmerizing Mihun Terrace viewing platform where mist-shrouded peaks emerge and vanish, creating an enchanting spectacle. Visitors can ascend via the Bailong Sky Ladder, the world's highest outdoor elevator at 326 meters, offering a swift and awe-inspiring journey to the summit in just one minute.

Tianzi Mountain: Named after Xiang Dakun, a Tujia ethnic leader in the early Ming Dynasty who styled himself "Xiang Tianzi" (meaning "To the Son of Heaven"), this scenic area boasts expansive vistas and majestic landscapes. Iconic attractions include Yubi Peak, Fairy Scattering Flowers, and Xihai Stone Forest. The Yubi Peak cluster of peaks, neatly aligned like inverted brushes piercing the clouds, stands as Zhangjiajie's signature landmark. Tianzi Mountain also offers one of the best vantage points for viewing sea of clouds, where surging mists create a surreal fairyland-like atmosphere.

Yangjiajie: Developed relatively late, it retains its pristine ecological landscape and is renowned for its perilous, spectacular, and secluded terrain. Attractions such as Tianbo Mansion, Wulong Fort, and Yibu Dengtian feature dense peak forests, steep mountain slopes, and winding trails, exuding a rustic charm. With relatively few visitors, it is ideal for those who prefer tranquility and immersive hiking experiences.

IV. Ecological Resources and Environment

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a natural kingdom of flora and fauna, with a forest coverage rate as high as 98%. The air contains exceptionally high levels of negative oxygen ions, making it a genuine natural oxygen bar that is highly beneficial for human health and wellness.

The scenic area boasts abundant plant resources, with over 850 species of woody plants, including nationally protected first-class species such as Davidia involucrata, Ginkgo biloba, Taxus chinensis, and Bole tree, which are rare and valuable. The animal resources are equally diverse, featuring more than 400 species of wildlife, with common species including macaques, Chinese giant salamanders (Chinese newt), pangolins, red-bellied pheasants, and squirrels. The ecosystem remains intact and pristine, brimming with vitality.

V. Seasonal Travel Experiences

Zhangjiajie offers year-round attractions with seasonal wonders. Spring (March-May) sees nature come alive: vibrant wildflowers bloom across the mountains, streams flow abundantly, waterfalls cascade with force, and the hills brim with vitality – perfect for hiking and spring outings. Summer (June-August) brings cool mountain temperatures averaging around 20°C, making it ideal for escaping the heat. While misty weather often shrouds the peaks in ethereal beauty, frequent rain requires proper gear. Autumn (September-November) shines as the golden season: crisp skies, crystal-clear visibility, and crimson foliage create breathtaking photo opportunities. Winter (December-February) offers tranquil solitude with occasional snowfall, where frost-covered peaks resemble a snowy fairy tale. Discounted admission prices make this season particularly cost-effective.

VI. Practical Travel Tips

1. The scenic area ticket is a pass valid for 4 days, including access to eco-friendly sightseeing buses within the park without requiring additional purchases. We recommend visiting for 2-3 days to fully explore the core attractions.

2. The scenic area covers a large area with numerous mountain paths and significant elevation changes. It is essential to wear comfortable hiking shoes or athletic shoes to reduce leg strain.

3. Mountainous areas experience variable weather with frequent changes between overcast and sunny conditions. It is advisable to carry raincoats and umbrellas to avoid getting drenched and catching a cold. The temperature on mountains is lower than at lower elevations, and even in summer, a light jacket should be prepared.

4. Do not feed wild macaques indiscriminately to avoid scratches; refrain from picking wild flowers and fruits to protect the ecological environment.

5. Classic two-day tour itinerary: On the first day, explore Jinbian Stream and Yuanjiajie; on the second day, visit Yangjiajie, Tianzishan, and Huangshizhai. The route is easy and well-structured, with no retracing of steps.
