Essential Travel Tips for Foreign Visitors

• Transport: In Bangkok, use BTS Skytrain or MRT for convenient travel; use tuk-tuk or Grab for short distances (bargain with tuk-tuk drivers in advance). In Chiang Mai, songthaew (shared taxis) are the most common means of transportation. For long-distance travel, domestic flights and trains are recommended; Thai train tickets are electronic and need to be printed before use.

• Language: Thai is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Signs are mostly in Thai and English, so communication is convenient. Learning a few simple Thai phrases (such as "sawasdee" for hello) will be more popular.

• Currency: The local currency is Thai Baht (THB). Credit cards are widely accepted in shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels; ATMs are easily accessible for cash withdrawal. Some places also accept Alipay or WeChat Pay.

• Weather: Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate, with temperatures ranging from 25–35°C all year round. It is divided into dry season (November to April) and rainy season (May to October). Rain showers are frequent in the rainy season, so it is recommended to bring an umbrella and sunscreen. Indoor air conditioning is usually very cold, so a thin coat is recommended.

• Etiquette:

○ Dress modestly when visiting temples (cover shoulders and knees; some temples provide robes for visitors). Do not touch Buddha statues or monks’ heads (a sign of disrespect in Thai culture).

○ Respect the Thai royal family; do not speak ill of the king or royal family (heavy fines or imprisonment may apply for violations).

○ No smoking in public areas (heavy fines apply for violations); queue up in an orderly manner in public places.

○ Take off your shoes when entering temples or someone’s home; do not point at others with your fingers.

• Best Eats: Don’t miss local delicacies such as pad thai, tom yum goong, mango sticky rice, khao soi, sai oua, and fresh seafood. Visit local night markets and food courts for affordable and authentic flavors.

• Book Ahead: It is recommended to book domestic flights, train tickets, and popular attractions (such as Grand Palace, ethical elephant sanctuaries) online in advance to avoid long queues. For visa-free entry, ensure your passport is valid for more than 6 months and fill in the Electronic Arrival Card in advance.

• Safety: Keep your personal documents and valuables safe; make copies of your passport and store them separately. Be cautious when participating in water sports, choose regular and qualified operators, and wear life jackets at all times. Do not carry or use e-cigarettes (banned in Thailand) and do not bring drones without prior approval. Pay attention to weather changes, especially during the rainy season.
